Recruitment: Truths and Myths
Written by J. Ward

It is wise to be aware of some of the truths and myths surrounding recruitment, so that one does not lose sight of the basics of the recruitment process.

RECRUITMENT TRUTHS:

· There are no perfect candidates and no perfect jobs.

· There are no ‘best’ or ‘right’ candidates, only the most contributive.

· There are only 3 reasons why people are employed:

-to increase the revenue of the company.
-to decrease the company’s expenditure. = Contributive Value (all three statements together).
-to improve the company’s profits.

· True recruitment expertise is earned, not attributed.

· Whether to employ or not to employ a person is the most important decision an employer can make, as it affects the life of the candidate and the profitability of the organisation.

· Salaries / wages is the largest expense in any business.

· The actual cost of a new employee to a company in the first year is roughly twice the employee’s basic annual salary. *

· What you don’t know can hurt you.

· Companies are only as good as their staff.

SOME RECRUITMENT MYTHS:

· The higher the agency fee, the better the service.

· The larger the agency, the better the service.

· The more CV’s an agency sends to an employer, the greater the chances of one being successful.

Having regard to this statement, calculate your staff (or your client’s staff) turnover rate and cost thereof.
