3 Common business mistakes…are you making any of these?

by Rodney D. Walker, M.B.A.

Mistakes are a part of life and business, however, there are some mistakes that are more common for businesses to make which can spell real trouble. Discover, what some businesses do too much of that can cripple their business efforts.

Here are a few common business mistakes that can impact a business owner's bottom line by doing too much of. Yes, too much of anything can be a bad thing, regardless of how well intentioned it might is. Be warned, many entrepreneurs, businesses, and corporations get stuck in these common mistakes.

1. Too much time in developmentnot enough time marketing. This is especially tempting for the creative entrepreneurial types because a great part of the excitement is in seeing something you have developed come into reality. However, if the service or product that you have developed is only known by you, a few friends, and family members then what you have done is wasted a lot of time planning instead of meeting your business goal. This is also very tempting for perfectionist, because the product or service that you are developing is never really good enough for you to showcase to the world. With this type of mentality you are very likely to get stuck in development.

2. Too much time searching for new businessnot enough time nurturing existing business clients/customers. It is twice and sometimes three and four times harder to get new business then it is to do more business with an existing client. How are you nurturing the relationships of your existing clients? Or, do you find yourself on the treadmill of only pursuing new business. Remember, doing business is not about your busy-ness, rather, it is about working smarter to achieve your bottom line goals with a sense of balance in life.

3. Too much time doing businessnot enough time reflecting on ways to improve their business and implementing necessary changes. When was the last time you spend some serious time thinking about your business and ways to improve how you conduct your business? Who are you in conversation with about conducting business? Are you apart of a network of other business owners that sharpen your business skills? Do you have a business coach or consultant that helps you process through decisions that can save you time, money, and energy if you got great advice from them? The sad reality is that many businesses fail because they do not make the necessary changes to help them thrive.

Business Coaching Solutions to Help You Correct These Common Mistakes:

1. Dedicate at least an hour each day to just marketing. Try to set a routine and system that becomes a natural part of what you do everyday to promote your business. Decide when you will market your business and stick to it. Evaluate the results of your marketing efforts each week.

2. Evaluate which of your existing customers/clients you need to nurture more in order to gain more business from. It is much easier to get more business from an existing client than it is to get a new client. Start where you already have some traction.

3. Set aside at least 20-30 minutes each week to reflect on ways to improve your business. What are you currently doing that you can do better if you simply worked more efficiently? How can you save money and time by working smarter instead of harder? What is draining you? What can energize you to better performance?

Taking the time to answer questions like these can help you move forward and avoid common business mistakes.
